How Much Do Painters Cost?

How much do house painters charge today? How do they arrive at their rates? Why do quotes differ so dramatically?

If you've ever sourced quotes for interior painting, you've probably asked yourself these questions. A look at how professional interior painters calculate their rates today will help you get more accurate quotes from painters and choose the best contractor for your job.

How Do Interior Painters Calculate Their Rates?

A painter will usually give an initial quote based on a rate per square metre and, in most cases, the job quote includes fees for paint and other supplies. However, the per square metre charge is deceptive. An experienced painter goes beyond the size of the area they will be painting and looks at all the work that goes in to painting a home interior. For example:

  • Is there any surface preparation involved?
  • Do the architraves need special treatment?
  • How many doors need to be painted?
  • What about the ceiling trim?
  • How high is the ceiling?

Other things a good painter will consider when working out a quote are the numbers of colours they need to use, whether or not special paints or painting techniques are needed and the quality of paint the job requires. These things and more will be factored into their painting quote because they know from experience that if they don't, they will not stay in business very long. Less experienced painters may overlook these factors and focus on giving a competitive quote.

Don't be fooled into take advantage of a cheap quote if you want to get pleasing results. A recent quote based on a detailed analysis of the scope of the job is a reflection of the painter's high level of professionalism.

What is the Average Cost of Interior Painting?

The average cost of interior painting in Australia is about $18 to $20 per square metre, including the ceiling which is usually calculated at a higher rate per square metre.

For an easy job using a single colour with minimal trim work, your quote may be as little as $14 per square metre. For a more difficult job that requires multiple colours, gloss architraves and a separate colour for the ceiling trim, a quote might be $28+ per square metre. Expect to pay even more for special finishes to achieve crackle or sponged effects.

How Much do House Painters Charge Per Hour?

Many interior painters charge by the hour and because rates depend on the specific suburb you live in, getting local quotes is the best course of action.

In 2015, interior painters charge on average around $40 per hour (with rates ranging between $18 and $40 an hour). Interestingly, this is a few dollars cheaper than homeowners paid back in 2012 and 2013.

House painting tends to cost more in Canberra and across the ACT, while homeowners in Victoria benefit from the cheapest painting quotes in the country.

When getting quotes for interior painting, keep the points outlined above in mind and you'll get more accurate quotes. If you just tell the painter how many square metres need to be covered, they will have to fill in the blanks themselves and one quote may be much higher or lower than another. If you provide a complete picture in the beginning, quotes are likely to be more realistic and you won't be in for any nasty surprises when the painters come and inspect your home before giving you a final quote and contract.

As with any tradie, be sure your interior painter is licensed and insured. If they are not insured, you can be held responsible for any accidents or injuries that occur while they're working on your property.
